Café pHILOSOPhY  is a non-academic philosophy magazine published every two months. The primary aim is to show that philosophy can be exciting, worthwhile and comprehensible, and also to provide some light and enjoyable reading matter for the stimulation of café conversation.

What is Philosophy?

If you'd like to know what the subject of philosophy includes, a very good article by Tom Morris, featured in The Huffington Post, can be found here ; http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-morris/what-is-philosophy-its-no_b_581506.html

A similar article by Simon Critchley featured in the New York Times explains what it is to actually be a philosopher. http://o pinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/16/what-is-a-philosopher/?emc=eta1

Philosophy in Practice

A Guide to Happiness   (DVD) Written and presented by Alain de Botton ; producer: Neil Crombie ; director: Celia Lowenstein.

A brilliant film about the practical side of philosophy. It shows how philosophical wisdom can be applied to the real issues of life.   For instance Arthur Schopenhauer's theories explain how love and marriage may not lead to happiness but also suggests that this is not a reason to become bitter and twisted.   Friedrich Nietzsche warns of the dangers of alcohol and the need for self control.

Editorial

Tom McGuire

The Rugby World Cup 2011 is clearly a huge event but in Wellington there are many thousands of people that have been involved with, and enjoyed the Cuba St. Carnival, unfortunately the 2011 Carnival has been cancelled.  A protest group under the banner of:

DONT cancel the WELLINGTON CUBA CARNIVAL 2011

has been started by Natalie Mullins and we urge as many people as possible to support this group.  Tom McGuire mentions it in his editorial column on page 2 and Ryan Eyers provides a good summary of the background details leading up to the cancellation on page 14/15.
